The Resume Is Dead

Getting a job has changed forever, simply sending out resumes doesn't work anymore..

The fact is that most resumes aren't even read. And most of the resumes received by large companies are simply "read" by computers. The problem is that a resume, on its own, offers no connection. It lacks for, information that shows them how you can make their company more successful and distinguish yourself from other applicants.

Resumes are good records of "past employment". But today, companies aren't looking to find out what you did in the past. They want to know what you can do for them now and in the future to make them better and more profitable.

You'd think the Internet would have made it easier to get a job. In a few mouse clicks, you can send your resume to companies and apply for jobs in minutes. It's easy. It involves no thinking on your part about the people or company you are sending it to. It requires no knowledge of anything but of YOURSELF!

What are you doing now? Probably sounds a lot like this: you go out and buy some program, book, or service to help you write your resume. And you spend a lot of time and money perfecting your resume - the average person spends between $40 and $100. Then you jump on the internet and send that resume out in response to job offers on job boards.

Then you wait.

And wait some more.

And nothing happens.

Unless you change your approach to getting a job, nothing is going to happen... In addition to the 15 million unemployed Americans looking for jobs, and an equal number looking to change jobs, there are 50 million unemployed people in the developing world. n the next 9 years, there will be 460 million new job seekers, worldwide! So while sending out hundreds of resumes has you working hard, it doesn't have you working effectively.

Employers are still looking for the right people. But they're struggling to find them.

Too many people are applying for the same jobs, tying up valuable resources, and annihilating the resume's effectiveness in helping recruiters know that they've found the right candidate.

Companies now receive thousands of resumes, through job search sites like Monster.com - so many, in fact, that they rely on computers to sort them. But computers don't think, they sort objects. In the case of jobs, they simply search for the right keywords, which don't tell companies anything about you other than your past history.

The simple truth, that no one is telling you, is that getting a job in today's struggling economy is tough. It requires research and knowledge about the company you are applying to. You need to know all about them. You need to think about their needs and create a proposal that shows how you can make their enterprise more successful. This is true whether you are applying for a "job around the corner" or to a large multinational corporation.

You have to give recruiters a stronger reason to pick you.

To get a job in today's market, you need to engage employers more directly. You have to find a way to sidestep the "noise" being created by the internet and to deliver employers a clear value proposition. This proposition must show them exactly how you will make their company better and more successful.

By showing employers how you can improve their company, and presenting yourself in a way that an ordinary resume can't accomplish, you will significantly increase your chances of landing a job. You'll also find that it will give you fascinating insights into the unique personal qualities that make you stand out as the perfect candidate.
